What is an American?
What am I? What are you?
What is she? What is he?
Anyone of us can be an American
And yet we are not all the same
She has black hair
He has blue eyes
She’s short
He’s tall
Her eyebrow game is on point
And well he’s a guy
We are all different in our own ways
Somehow we are all put under one category,
An American, A Mexican, An Italian, A German, A French
We are put under one name that defines who we are
Yet we are all unique
Being an American means being yourself
Being individual while under this name
An American is someone honest
Someone who can say how they really feel
Like, you don’t like me?
Let me know, just be truthful
An American is some strong enough to get through life’s struggles
Strong enough to get through anything honestly
Strong enough to stay true to themselves
An American is loyal
Not only loyal to our country but to our world
Loyal to ourselves
To our lovers
Even to our haters
If that makes sense
An American is extraordinary
We don’t change for others,
He doesn’t like you?
His loss
For the most part we are self-reliant
We may have someone to lean on during the bad
But during the good we manage our grounds on our own
Each American has a different voice
To express our thoughts
Not everyone thinks the same
The same way we don’t look the same and we don’t learn the same
Everything we do is done differently
How we get to and from school each day
What we do each morning to get ready
How we play sports,
For example,
Baseball players and their batting stance
Each player goes up to the plate to do the same thing
Yet they get themselves set up so differently
Some hit the plate with their bats before each pitch
Some move their helmets
Some only do something when they first get to the plate
Some stand up straight until the pitcher is winding up
Some get themselves into a position that makes the strike zone smaller
Yet they are all up there to do the same thing
Hit the ball
Every American knows that each day will be different
Today might not be so good but there’s always tomorrow
As well today might be great but tomorrow can be a mess
Anything can happen
Just make the best of what you have at the moment
This is the up side to an American
An American is not all good
No one can be purely good
We have the bad in the good and the good in the bad
But I mean come on
We are only human
An American can be a hater
She has something you don’t?
It doesn’t give you the right to say stuff about her
Same goes the other way around
You have something she doesn’t?
Doesn’t mean you have to rub it in everyone’s face
An American can be someone who honestly has no heart
They treat everything like a joke
They don’t care about how others can feel about what they say
These people are usually the people that have been broken before
People who always had their guard down until they were hurt
Being an American has its ups and downs
But we find our way to continue life with them
Anyone can be an American
Simply be yourself and stay true to what you believe
So, you ask me
What is an American?
You
